As the opioid addiction and abuse epidemic remains an immense public health crisis, Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is committed to continuing to take new steps to address these dangers from every possible angle, indicates FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb, MD, in a statement. According to Dr Gottlieb’sremarks from the Online Opioid Summit, FDA’s approach is focused on three areas of action and include taking steps to:
- decrease exposure to prescription opioids to reduce the rate of new addiction;
- create guidance for those who aim to develop innovative treatments for addiction as well as better guidance for those who develop treatments for pain without the same risks of addiction; and
- increase FDA’s enforcement activities to crack down on illegal sales of opioids.
