FDA Commissioner Discusses Agency’s Efforts to Protect Patients and Enforce Laws that Govern Compounding – Drug for nerve pain boosts high for opioid abusers. (866) 348-2889
Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Commissioner Scott Gottlieb, MD, indicates that because compounded drugs are not FDA-approved, it is important for patients and the medical community to have access to information about the quality of compounded products. In a statement, Dr Gottlieb discussed a recent Department of Justice announcement related to numerous health care fraud enforcement actions targeting schemes billing reimbursors for medically unnecessary compounded drugs, including compounded pain and scar creams. In the coming months, Dr Gottlieb said FDA intends to announce its plan to improve the information available about compounded topical pain creams, which will help inform reimbursors’ and the medical community’s decisions about these products.
