In Michigan, state lawmakers have passed a package of bills aimed at reducing production of illegal methamphetamine by targeting “smurfs” – people who purchase pseudoephedrine (PSE) products in small quantities, then sell them to meth cooks to bypass state restrictions. The package includes HB 5089 and HB 5090, which make it a felony to purchase PSE with the knowledge that it will be used to manufacture meth.

The legislation also requires Michigan State Police to report meth convictions to a national database, which would inform pharmacists if someone trying to purchase a PSE-containing drug has had a meth-related conviction within the last 10 years, and prohibits sales to such individuals without a prescription.
